How to Do a Tarot Reading

You don't need special gifts or the right moon phase. A good reading is mostly about attention. Here's a simple ritual you can do in five minutes, with cards or on a screen.

1. Set a question

Specific beats vague. "What is keeping me stuck in this job?" gives the cards something to grab. "Tell me about my future" gives them nothing. Write the question down before you draw.

2. Shuffle with intent

The physical act of shuffling isn't superstition — it's how you stop scrolling and start focusing. Hold the question in mind while the cards mix. (Online, the shuffle does this for you: a short pause, the deck riffling, then the draw.)

3. Draw and lay out

Pick a spread that fits the question. One card for a nudge. Three for past / present / future. Six for a relationship. Ten for a full Celtic Cross. Lay them where you can see each position.

4. Read each position

Go card by card, in position order. The same card reads differently as "what's behind you" versus "what's ahead." Let the position shape the meaning instead of repeating one line for every card.

5. Reflect

When the cards are down, sit for a minute. Which one surprised you? What in your life echoes it? The reflection — not the draw — is where the reading does its work.

Online vs physical cards

The process is identical. A screen holds the symbols and runs the shuffle; you still bring the question and the attention. Does online tarot actually work? For the part that matters — your reflection — yes.
